Mr. Cephas Lumina
Cephas Lumina, a Zambian national, holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) (with Merit) from the University of Zambia, Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in international law / human rights from Griffith University in Australia and an Advanced Diploma in International Human Rights Law from the Abo Akademi Institute of Human Rights, Abo Akademi University in Finland.
He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Griffith University and specialist qualifications in international humanitarian law and environmental litigation and advocacy.
Dr Lumina is an Advocate of the High Court for Zambia (called to the bar in 1986) and an Extra-Ordinary Lecturer at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria in South Africa.
He has over 20 years’ legal practice, research and teaching experience in several countries including Australia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia.
He has served as a Visiting Lecturer at Makerere University in Uganda, a Visiting Professor at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Lund University in Sweden, a member of the Core Faculty of the International Human Rights Exchange Programme, a consultant to various regional and international organizations and development agencies (including the United Nations Development Programme, Canadian International Development Agency, Swedish International Development Agency, Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and Human Rights Trust of Southern Africa), part-time prosecutor in the High Court of Swaziland, a judge in the South African round of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and as a coach/advisor to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Southern African Team which participated in the Jean Pictet International Humanitarian Law Competition in France in 2004.
Dr Lumina has given numerous lectures and presented papers on human rights at various international conferences. He has published in the areas of human rights, humanitarian law, commercial law and legal education.
He is a member of the editorial board of the African Yearbook on International Humanitarian Law and he has served as a referee for several international journals and publications, including the Global Corruption Report.
He is a director of the Human Rights & Governance Consultancy, a South African-based consultancy firm established in 2005.
