2002 Seminar
Seminar on the interdependence between democracy and human rights
Geneva, 25-26 November 2002

Commission on Human Rights' resolution 2001/41 on Continuing dialogue on measures to promote and consolidate democracy called on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to organize an expert seminar to examine the interdependence between democracy and human rights, and to report on its conclusions to the Commission’s 59th session.

OHCHR held the seminar on 25 and 26 November 2002 in Room XX of the Palais des Nations.  The seminar's conclusions are available as an official document of the Commission.

The seminar had two objectives.  The first was to make a conceptual contribution to the ongoing debate on democracy and its relationship with all human rights.  The second was to engage in a more practical dialogue on concrete ways and means of promoting and consolidating democracy.

Participation and accreditation:

The seminar was open to Governments, United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, other relevant intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council.
