Objectives of the Day of General Discussion
During its 36th session (1-19 May 2006), the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights will host a Day of General Discussion (DGD) on the Right to Social Security (Article 9 of the Covenant).
The aim of the DGD is to foster a deeper understanding of the content and implications of article 9 of the Covenant. The General Discussion will
- Explore the normative content of article 9 and its linkages to other articles of the Covenant;
- Analyse the various obligations that article 9 imposes on States parties; and
- Consider possible means that States parties can adopt at the national level for the implementation of the right to social security.
Date and venue
The DGD will take place in Geneva, United Nations Office, Palais des Nations, Room XXIV, on Monday 15 May 2006.
Draft General Comment on the right to social security
At its 35th session, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights decided to begin consideration of a draft General Comment on the right to social security at its next session. The DGD will offer an opportunity to the Committee to review its draft General Comment in the light of the comments and suggestions made by the experts.
The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights would like to solicit States parties, United Nations specialised agencies and bodies, United Nations human rights mechanisms, national human rights institutions, trade unions, employers’ organisations, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and other interested organisations or individuals to provide comments and suggestions on its draft General Comment on the right to social security.
