Human Rights Scholarship Opportunities

In an effort to contribute to teaching and learning about human rights, and in the framework of the World Programme for Human Rights Education (2005-ongoing), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is pleased to dedicate this menu to posting scholarship opportunities awarded by various actors. The Office invites all relevant institutions and organizations to send to < hredatabase@ohchr.org > precise information on scholarship opportunities awarded by them together with the address of persons or web sites, if any, to be consulted for further information.

Bernstein Fellowships
The Bernstein Fellowships established in honor of Robert S. Bernstein, founding chair of Human Rights Watch, provide financial support to allow two Yale Law School graduates to pursue international human rights work. Fellows work full time for one year at Human Rights Watch, based in New York City or Washington, D.C. Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations. The Bernstein Fellowships provides a stipend of approximately $37,500 for one year, beginning in the Fall. Please note that the Bernstein Fellowships are administered through Yale Law School (applications should not be sent to Human Rights Watch). Applications must be received at the Schell Center by February 15 to be considered for a fellowship beginning in the fall of the same year.

British Chevening Scholarships
The British Chevening Scholarships are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council. These are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the United Kingdom . Scholarships are offered in over 160 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the United Kingdom and gain skills which will benefit their countries. The Chevening programme currently provides around 2,300 scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at UK Institutions of Higher Education.

Giulia Mereu Scholarship
The Giulia Mereu Scholarship is awarded annually to full-time postgraduate students in the LL.M. course in international human rights law at the University of Essex . This scholarship has been established by the family and friends of Giulia Mereu who lost her life at age 26, in 1996, while monitoring human rights violations in the former Yugoslavia.

Graduate Scholarships in Reproductive Health
Graduate Scholarships in Reproductive Health are designed to allow law graduates from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia or Central and Eastern Europe, with a special focus on candidates from Brazil, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru who have an interest in human rights and women's health in their own countries, to undertake advanced research and study in the field of law. The Scholarships cover tuition and incidental fees (approximately $18,500), provide a stipend of $15,000 and books, and (in some cases) provide a stipend for an internship directly related to their graduate research. This scholarship is open to any graduate student from the targeted countries.

Graduate Scholarships in Women's Rights
The Graduate Scholarships in Women's Rights are open to law graduates from Africa, Central or South America, the Middle East , East or South East Asia who have an interest in the human rights of women to undertake advanced research and study in this area. A Fellow will be expected to make a significant contribution to the activities of the Faculty's Women's Human Rights Resources website by providing the website with an annotated bibliography based on their research, and agreeing to facilitate collaboration between organizations/institutions in their home country and the website. After completion of their Fellowship, a Fellow must return to their home country and reside there for a minimum of two years.

Human Rights and Human Migration Scholarship
The Human Rights Centre in the School of Law at Queen's is offering a studentship in the area of ‘Human Rights and Human Migration'. The studentship is designed for a suitably qualified person wishing to undertake research on the human rights implications of migration law and policy. Students applying for this studentship should ideally have completed or be in the process of completing a Master's degree in a relevant law-related discipline. However, students with outstanding first degrees who can demonstrate evidence of relevant research skills and potential will also be given consideration. The successful applicant will receive an award which will cover fees and a living allowance of up to £12, 000 per year. The closing date is 31 May 2007.

Human Rights Education Fellowship - University of Leeds
The Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights Education (CCHRE) at the University of Leeds welcomes applications from prospective doctoral students. The CCHRE has experience in supervising PhD students in the area of education for human rights and equalities; citizenship education; development education and global citizenship; equity, diversity, inclusion and institutional development; teachers' work, life histories and social and cultural change. The scholarships will provide academic fees at the UK/EU rate and a maintenance grant between £8,400 and £12,600 per annum (full-time rate), for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. The closing date is 1 June 2007.

Human Rights Policy Fellows Program
The Carr Center for Human Rights Policy Fellows Program brings together a diverse group of human rights practitioners, scholars and activists to conduct research on human rights policy, contribute to the Center's programs, and participate in broader dialogue with students, faculty and researchers in the Harvard community. The application deadline is 31 May 2007 for 2007/2008 Fellowship.

2007-2008 Human Rights Watch Fellowships
Human Rights Watch will award four fellowships to recent graduates of law schools or graduate programs (master's degree and above) in journalism, international relations, area studies, or other relevant disciplines. The Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship is open to any candidate who meets these criteria. The Leonard H. Sandler Fellowship is restricted to graduates of Columbia Law School . The Arthur Helton Fellowship is restricted to graduates of New York University School of Law. The Aryeh Neier Fellowship is a two-year joint fellowship with HRW and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Fellows work full time for one year at Human Rights Watch, based in New York City or Washington , D.C. Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations. Applicants must have exceptional analytic skills, an ability to write and speak clearly, and a commitment to work in the human rights field in the future on a paid or volunteer basis. Fellowships begin in September 2007 and application deadline is 6 October 2006.

John Peters Humphrey Student Fellowship
The Canadian Council on International Law awards annually up to four  John Peters Humphrey Student Fellowships in International Human Rights Law and Organization. The Fellowships are awarded to outstanding students in order to permit them to pursue full-time graduate studies in international human rights law and organization at leading graduate institutions in Canada or worldwide. Students in Canadian law and political science (or their equivalent) faculties are eligible to apply for the Fellowship. Each Fellowship will fund the recipient up to CDN$35,000 – up to a maximum of CDN$25,000 for tuition and fees, plus a stipend of CDN$10,000 for living expenses.

OSI / Chevening / Essex Scholarships in Human Rights Studies
The OSI/Chevening/Essex Scholarships in Human Rights Studies is a scholarship programme which will enable suitably qualified students from eligible countries to pursue taught postgraduate programmes within the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex . The two programmes offered are the MA in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights and the LLM in International Human Rights Law. The scholarships are open to applicants from Armenia , Azerbaijan , Georgia , Kazakhstan , Tajikistan , Turkey , Turkmenistan , Jordan , Palestine , Indonesia and Uzbekistan . Each award will provide for payment of academic tuition fees, examination fees, a monthly stipend for living expenses sufficient for a single student. Postgraduate Scholarships for the MA in Global Citizenship, Identities and Human Rights
The University of Nottingham , School of Sociology and Social Policy is offering 2 x £4,000 scholarships for students starting full-time study on the MA Programme - Social Policy and Administration in September 2007. Applicants must be classified as ‘overseas' students for fees purposes and be applying to study full time. The scholarship winners will be notified in June 2007. Applications for the scholarships should be submitted to the School of Sociology and Social Policy by the 31st May 2007.

Rotary World Peace Fellowship Funding
The Rotary World Peace Fellowship supports the Rotary World Peace Fellow for a two-year master's-level degree program at one of the Rotary Centers for International Studies. Fellowships cover a 21-month period. This period includes two academic years as well as the three-month summer break between academic-year periods. Fellows are encouraged to pursue degree-related activities during their summer breaks, such as internships, volunteer work, and research.

Scholar Rescue Fund Fellowships
The Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) fellowships supports temporary visits to universities and colleges around the world by scholars whose life, security or work is threatened in their home region. Scholars from any country and any field or discipline--including preeminent academics, public intellectuals, writers and artists--may qualify. Non-emergency applications are reviewed in October, January and April each year. Emergency applications may be reviewed on a more frequent basis. Awards are made to universities, colleges and other institutions willing to host a fellowship candidate and to contribute necessary additional support.

Stephen Livingstone Scholarship
In honour of our late colleague, Professor Stephen Livingstone (1961-2004), the School of Law at Queen's University is establishing a studentship in the areas of human rights law or public law. Stephen was Professor of Human Rights Law, a former Head of the School of Law and Director of the Human Rights Centre, as well as a renowned human rights activist and Commissioner on the Northern Ireland Equality Commission.

The studentship is designed for a suitably qualified graduate with experience of working in a human rights based NGO or similar organisation either in the EU or beyond who wishes to undertake: (a) Taught LLM in Human Rights at QUB, (b) Research MPhil degree in the areas of human rights or public law, including prison law and those aspects of legal theory that were of interest to Professor Livingstone; or - a suitably qualified EU applicant who wishes to undertake research for a PhD in the area of human rights law or public law, including prison law and those aspects of legal theory that were of interest to Professor Livingstone. The successful applicant will receive an award which will cover fees, and a living allowance up to £12,000 per year. The closing date is 8 June 2007 .

The Oak Human Rights Fellowship
The Oak Fellowship annually offers an opportunity for one prominent practitioner in international human rights to take a sabbatical leave from front-line work and spend the fall semester (September-December) in residence at Colby. This provides the fellow time for respite, reflection, research, and writing. Following the period of the award the fellow is expected to return home to continue her/his human rights work.
